Men and Menopause Survey 2024

At The Menopause Hub, we are dedicated to raising awareness and fostering open conversations about menopause—not just among women but also among the men in their lives. Our latest Men and Menopause Survey sheds light on how menopause affects relationships, intimacy, and overall understanding among men in Ireland. Our findings come from the feedback of 461 male respondents.

Men Recognizing the Impact of Menopause

The survey results are eye-opening: nearly 60% of men reported that menopause symptoms have impacted their relationship, with almost half (48%) saying it has negatively affected their sex life. More strikingly, 8% of men admitted to having considered ending their relationship due to the challenges menopause can bring. These findings highlight the strain menopause can place on couples and the importance of open communication and support.

However, there is a positive takeaway. The survey shows that men are not only aware of the impact of menopause but also willing to learn more. Encouragingly, 56% of men expressed interest in attending workshops or educational programs to better understand what their partners experience. Additionally, 80% of respondents feel comfortable discussing menopause, and 70% believe they can provide emotional support.

Bridging the Knowledge Gap

One of the most promising aspects of the survey is the recognition among men that menopause is a significant life stage for women. Many respondents could list common symptoms, such as hot flushes, loss of libido, mood swings, and extreme fatigue, and acknowledged menopause as both a physical and emotional challenge. More than seven in ten men called for increased information and resources on menopause, demonstrating a growing willingness to engage with and support their partners.

Our CEO, Loretta Dignam, highlighted the importance of these findings: “I was surprised and encouraged at the level of understanding that men said they had about menopause, which was much better than I had anticipated… It shows women have male allies when they try and navigate their menopause journey, which can also hugely impact personal and working lives.”

Encouraging Open Conversations

The Men and Menopause Survey underscores the need for continued education and dialogue. Women experiencing menopause should feel empowered to communicate openly with their partners, and men should be equipped with the knowledge to offer meaningful support. By fostering mutual understanding, we can help couples navigate this transition together, strengthening relationships rather than straining them.

At The Menopause Hub, we are committed to providing resources to help individuals, couples, and workplaces become more menopause-aware. Together, we can break the silence, improve relationships, and create a more supportive environment for those experiencing menopause.
