Celebrating Organisations Creating Menopause Inclusive Workplaces

Menopause and perimenopause impact 50% of the global population – our mothers, sisters, partners, wives, friends, daughters, colleagues, peers, line managers, and teammates – while the other 50% are often affected indirectly.

Yet, these natural life stages have long been taboo and stigmatised, leaving many feeling overlooked or isolated. The Menopause Workplace Excellence Awards honours organisations and individuals who are making a significant impact in creating menopause-inclusive workplaces. This year, a new and crucial addition is the ‘Male Allyship’ award, which will recognise men who are actively supporting their female colleagues as they navigate the often challenging symptoms of menopause.

Organised by the Menopause Hub Academy and Great Place to Work and sponsored by Irish Life Health and Astellas, these awards highlight businesses across Ireland that are committed to fostering an environment where menopause is understood, accommodated, and supported.

The second annual awards ceremony will take place on October 10th at the prestigious Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in Dublin.

Why These Awards Matter

The Menopause Workplace Excellence Awards are more than just a recognition of efforts—they are a call to action. With *84% of women reporting that menopause symptoms negatively impact their work performance and *up to 10% leaving their jobs due to these symptoms, the economic and personal costs are substantial. Moreover, *34% of women have considered quitting their jobs due to menopause, and *38% have taken time off work, with *18% taking more than three days off.

Despite these challenges, *80% of women still believe menopause is a taboo subject, highlighting the critical need for increased awareness and support. Surveys show that over *90% of women want menopause awareness training for managers and HR, as well as formal workplace policies addressing menopause. Employers have a duty of care under health and safety laws to assess and consider the specific needs of employees affected by menopausal symptoms. Failing to support women in this regard may not only harm employee well-being but could also contravene equality laws related to age, gender, and disability discrimination.

These awards aim to bring these issues to the forefront, encouraging more businesses to take proactive steps in supporting their employees.

Recognising Male Allyship in the Workplace

The introduction of the Male Allyship Award underscores the critical importance of involving men in the conversation around peri/menopause. Menopause is not just a women's issue—it impacts families, relationships, and workplaces, and requires understanding and support from all genders.

As Loretta Dignam, CEO and Founder of the Menopause Hub Academy, emphasises, “Menopause cannot only be a women's issue and conversation; we need to engage men too, both personally and professionally.”

This award celebrates men who have actively stepped up as allies, showing leadership in championing menopause awareness, breaking down stigmas, and fostering a more supportive and inclusive culture for their colleagues. Whether through advocacy, education, or offering direct support, these men are helping to create a workplace where menopause is recognised as an important and shared concern for everyone. Their efforts contribute to a more compassionate and well-informed environment that benefits the entire workforce.

A Growing Movement

The Menopause Workplace Excellence Awards have garnered significant attention, with businesses across Ireland submitting entries before the September 12th closing date. A panel of esteemed judges, including Oonagh O'Hagan, owner and managing director of Meaghers Pharmacy, and Norah Casey, businesswoman, broadcaster, and Dragons’ Den star, will evaluate the submissions. Last year’s winners included Lidl Ireland, Tallaght University Hospital, and Kellanova, setting a high standard for excellence in menopause inclusivity.

As we approach the October 10th ceremony, we anticipate an evening of celebration, inspiration, and progress. The Menopause Workplace Excellence Awards 2024 is not just about honouring those who have already made a difference but also about motivating others to join the movement. Together, we can create workplaces that are inclusive, supportive, and equitable for all.
