Meaningful Ways to Celebrate International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day (IWD) is more than just a date on the calendar—it’s a global movement that honors the achievements of women and highlights the ongoing fight for gender equality. Whether you want to show support for the women in your life, advocate for change, or educate yourself on important issues, there are countless meaningful ways to celebrate.
Here are some ideas to help you make an impact on March 8th–and beyond!
1. Support women-owned businesses
One of the simplest yet most effective ways to celebrate IWD is by supporting women entrepreneurs. Whether it’s dining at a female-owned restaurant, shopping from women-led brands, or booking services from women professionals, your support helps empower women economically. Share your positive experiences in the form of a social media post or testimonial to help further amplify the business!
In Ireland, the percentage of female-led high-potential start-ups (HPSUs) increased from just 8% in 2012 to 37% in 2022. We certainly hope this upward trend continues!
2. Educate yourself on women’s issues
Take the time to learn about the struggles and triumphs of women across different cultures and backgrounds. For example, did you know that 35% of women in Ireland (more than one in three) have now experienced psychological, physical and/or sexual abuse from an intimate partner? Read books or articles, listen to podcasts, or watch documentaries about women’s rights, leadership, and contributions to society. Education is a powerful tool for change.
3. Have meaningful conversations
Start discussions with friends, family, or colleagues about gender equality, challenges women face, and how we can collectively work toward a more inclusive world. These conversations can raise awareness and encourage others to take action. There are some interesting stats from our recent survey to get you started!
4. Raise awareness about menopause
Menopause is a natural phase of life that affects every woman, yet it remains widely misunderstood and stigmatised. In fact, according to our recent survey, 87% of women believe that menopause is still taboo and 68% said that they were not at all prepared for menopause / perimenopause.
Use IWD as an opportunity to educate yourself and others about menopause, its symptoms, and how to better support menopausal women. Whether it’s sharing informative articles, attending webinars, or simply talking openly about the topic, raising awareness can help normalise the conversation.
Why not share our helpful Symptom Checker or view our range of useful resources.
5. Donate to women’s causes
Consider donating to charities and organisations that support women’s health, education, safety, and rights. Nonprofits need funding to continue their important work. Women’s Aid is a charity near and dear to our heart, and was our Charity Partner for the 2024 Menopause Workplace Excellence Awards. Women’s Aid is a national, feminist organisation working to prevent and address the impact of domestic violence. Donate here.
6. Amplify women’s voices on social media
Social media can be a powerful platform for spreading awareness. Share stories of inspiring women, highlight female-led initiatives, and promote important conversations about gender equity and menopause awareness.
7. Show appreciation for the women in your life
Take a moment to express gratitude to the women who have made a difference in your life—whether it’s your mother, sister, friend, teacher, or mentor. A heartfelt message, a handwritten note, or a simple “thank you” can mean a lot.
8. Encourage open conversations about women’s health
Women’s health issues, including menopause, often don’t get the attention they deserve. If you know someone going through menopause, offer support and understanding. Encourage workplaces and communities to provide better resources for women navigating this stage of life.
9. Volunteer Your Time
Get involved with organisations that support women, whether it’s mentoring young girls, helping at a women’s shelter, or participating in community programs that uplift women and girls.
10. Advocate for Policy Changes
Use IWD as a reminder to push for systemic changes that improve women’s lives. Whether it’s advocating for equal pay, improved maternity leave policies, or workplace menopause support, your voice matters in creating lasting change.
Celebrating Beyond March 8th
International Women’s Day is just one day, but the fight for gender equality and women’s well-being is ongoing. By incorporating these actions into your everyday life, you can contribute to a world where women are supported, valued, and empowered every day of the year.
How will you celebrate International Women’s Day this year? Let’s keep the conversation going and work together for a more inclusive future!
